With the name “Transalpin”, a fast daily connection from Wien Westbahnhof to Zurich (later Basel) was introduced on June 2, 1958. The use of the new class 4010 multiple units, which were available from May 1965, made this train connection a great classic. The elegant train sets with their distinctive paintwork in sapphire blue / ivory also had the best inner values. The interior of the cars was more comfortable and elegant than ever before in Austrian express train traffic. The six-part units, of which three were initially ordered, reached a significantly higher cruising speed with a top speed of 150 km / h. The ÖBB decided to use these successful sets to build up an inner-Austrian city express train network. The delivery of a second series (4010.04 to 4010.15) began as early as 1966.
The "Transalpin" remained inextricably linked to the 4010 until the switch to a locomotive hauled train in 1977. When the Arlberg route was interrupted, diversions from Bregenz via Lindau — Munich — Rosenheim — Salzburg were possible. In the non-electrified section of the route between Lindau and Geltendorf, the 4010 leader was given by DB locomotives of the 18.6 series (Bavarian S 3/6). V 100.10, V 200 and later 218.
